This a short under 2 min video of how I make hot meals and coffee when outdoors. This system worked great on my first solo canoe trip which consisted of mainly freeze dried food for my main meals. I now carry a frypan and 1.5L pot in addition to this system, it packs small and is great for day trips or whenever you are in a time crunch and just need to grab some freeze dried food and go!
Here is the item list:
- GSI Outdoors Halulite Minimalist Pot/Mug: Has an insulated sleeve and lid to use as coffee mug. Comes with silicone pot gripper to handle when hot.
- MSR Pocket Rocket 2 portable Stove - Super small and nests inside the GSI pot.
- GSI folding spork: Fits inside pot. I usually bring a long handled spoon, but the Mountain House breakfast pouch was short enough for the spork.
- Fuel canister: I buy MSR or jetboil canisters. They come in various sizes depending on how much you plan to use.
- Lighter: Fits inside pot
- Instant Coffee: I like Starbucks VIA instant coffee. On a day trip I will just store the packets inside the pot with the. I drink coffee black so this is all I need.
-Freeze Dried Food: I am still trying out a few brands, so far Mountain House, Backpackers Pantry and PeakRefuel are my favourites.
-Water: I use a 1L bottle to carry water, in a nalgene or smartwater bottle. I recommend 1L as this is the water amount for one water purification tablet.
