Sanbangsan is a prominent lava dome formed by volcanic activity around 800,000 years ago, located on Jeju Island’s southern coast. Its name means "a mountain from which fragrant energy arises." Though climbing to the summit is not permitted, the Sanbanggulsa Grotto Temple, built during the Goryeo Dynasty, sits peacefully within a cliffside cave, offering a quiet spiritual atmosphere and breathtaking views of the sea.
More than just a scenic spot, Sanbangsan is considered a sacred mountain in local legends and mythology—where nature, time, and belief intertwine. It's a place that invites not just tourists, but seekers of awe and serenity.


산방산은 약 80만 년 전 화산 활동으로 형성된 제주도의 대표적인 용암돔으로, 바다와 맞닿은 독특한 지형이 인상적인 곳입니다. 이름은 ‘산에서 향기로운 기운이 난다’는 뜻에서 유래했습니다. 정상은 오를 수 없지만, 산 중턱에 자리한 **산방굴사(山房窟寺)**는 고려시대에 창건된 불교 사찰로, 절벽 속 석굴에서 바라보는 풍경은 고요함과 경이로움을 동시에 줍니다.
산방산은 자연 경관뿐 아니라 제주의 신화와 전설이 깃든 신성한 산으로, 여행자들에게는 단순한 관광지를 넘어 자연과 시간, 믿음이 만나는 장소로 기억됩니다.
