【静岡／伊豆国一宮】三嶋大社／源頼朝ゆかりの神社 - Mishima-taisha Shrine in SHIZUOKA, JAPAN -

三嶋大社は、静岡県三島市に鎮座する伊豆国一宮、伊豆国総社。創建時期は不明ですが、古くよりこの地に鎮座し、奈良時代の文書にも記録が残っています。境内入口の大鳥居前を東西に旧東海道、南に旧下田街道が走る交通の要所。周辺は伊豆国の国府のあった場所で、のちに三嶋大社の鳥居前町として発達し、いつしか地名も大社に由来して「三島」と称されるようになりました。元来「三嶋」とは伊豆大島・三宅島等から成る伊豆諸島を指す言葉といいます。
中世に入ると、伊豆国一宮として源頼朝始め多くの武家からの崇敬を集めました。源頼朝は源氏再興をここ三嶋大社で祈願し、鶴岡八幡宮や二所権現（伊豆山神社・箱根神社）と並んで篤く崇敬しました。
三嶋大社の御祭神は、大山祇命（おおやまつみのみこと）と事代主命（ことしろぬしのみこと）の二柱。これらを三嶋大明神と総称します。大山祇命は、山林農産の守護神。事代主命は、大国主命（おおくにぬしのみこと）の息子で、恵比寿さんとして親しまれています。
三嶋神は東海随一の神格と周知され、近世以降は三島が東海道の宿場町として発達したのに伴い、東海道を往来する庶民からも篤く信仰されました。
源頼朝ゆかりの三嶋大社を参拝し、是非、鎌倉殿を辿る第一歩としてください。

Mishima Taisha is Ichinomiya of the Izu Province which is located in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The date of its construction is unknown, but it has been enshrined in this area since ancient times, and records remain in documents from the Nara period. The old Tokaido highway runs east-west in front of the large torii gate at the entrance of the shrine, and the old Shimoda highway runs south. The surrounding area was the place where the Kokufu of Izu Province was located, and later developed as the town of Toriimae of Mishima Taisha Shrine, and the place name was eventually derived from the shrine and became known as "Mishima". Originally, "Mishima" referred to the Izu Islands consisting of Izu Oshima and Miyakejima.
In the Middle Ages, the shrine was revered by many warrior families, including Minamoto no Yoritomo, as the first shrine in Izu Province. Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed for the reestablishment of the Minamoto clan at Mishima Grand Shrine, and it was revered along with Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine and Nisshogongen (Izusan Shrine and Hakone Shrine). The deities of the Mishima Taisha Shrine are the two pillars of Oyamatsumi-no-mikoto and Kotoshironushi-no-mikoto. These are collectively called Mishima Daimyojin.
Oyamazumi-no-mikoto is the guardian deity of mountains, forests and agriculture. Kotoyonushi-no-mikoto is the son of Okuninushi-no-mikoto, and is popularly known as Ebisu-san.
The deity Mishima is known to be the greatest deity in the Tokai region, and as Mishima developed as a post town on the Tokaido Highway in the modern era, the common people who traveled along the highway also believed in the deity.
I hope that visiting Mishima Taisha, which is associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo, will be the first step in tracing the Kamakura Palace.
