Sherbrooke is a city in southern Quebec, Canada. It is at the confluence of the Saint-François and Magog rivers in the heart of the Estrie administrative region. Sherbrooke is also the name of a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and census division (CD) of Quebec, coextensive with the city of Sherbrooke. With 172,950 residents at the Canada 2021 Census, it is the sixth largest city in the province and the 30th largest in Canada. The Sherbrooke Census Metropolitan Area had 227,398 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest metropolitan area in Quebec and 19th in Canada.

Sherbrooke is the primary economic, political, cultural, and institutional centre of Estrie, and was known as the Queen of the Eastern Townships at the beginning of the 20th century.

There are eight institutions educating 40,000 students and employing 11,000 people, 3,700 of whom are professors, teachers and researchers. The direct economic effect of these institutions exceeds one billion dollars. The proportion of university students is 10.32 students per 100 inhabitants, giving Sherbrooke the largest concentration of students in Quebec.

Sherbrooke rose as a manufacturing centre in the 1800s, and today the service sector is prominent.


Sherbrooke située au confluent des rivières Magog et Saint-François. Elle se trouve à environ 130 km à l'est de Montréal et à peu près 50 km au nord de la frontière américaine. Sherbrooke est le principal centre économique, culturel et institutionnel de la région administrative de l'Estrie5, d'où son surnom de « la Reine des Cantons-de-l'Est ». Elle est le siège d'un archevêché catholique6. Sa population est estimée à 178 809 habitants en 2022 et elle constitue la 6e ville en importance au Québec. La région métropolitaine de recensement de Sherbrooke compte quant à elle 224 557 habitants et constitue la 4e plus grande RMR au Québec et la 20e au Canada. Depuis novembre 2021, Évelyne Beaudin est la mairesse de Sherbrooke, la rendant la première femme à occuper ce poste.

Sherbrooke est un pôle universitaire important avec deux institutions (Université de Sherbrooke et Université Bishop's) et 40 000 étudiants par année11. La proportion d'étudiants universitaires y est de 10,32 étudiants par tranche de 100 habitants, ce qui proportionnellement à sa population, en fait la plus importante concentration d'étudiants au Québec. Depuis le xixe siècle, la ville est aussi un important centre manufacturier, bien que ce domaine ait connu une transformation considérable au cours des dernières décennies via le déclin des secteurs manufacturiers traditionnels de la ville. De nos jours, le secteur tertiaire occupe une place prépondérante dans l'économie de la ville, de même que l'économie du savoir, toujours croissante.
