Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto dismissed the plan to send even a small contingent of 100–300 troops, calling it “the beginning of a joke.” He said Italy won’t participate, arguing NATO should act collectively, not through fragmented national actions.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized a coordinated NATO presence is needed in the Arctic, citing the region’s new sea routes and huge energy and mineral resources—but Italy will not commit troops on its own.
