In this week’s Global Pulse, Martin Dresner, Dean's Professor of Supply Chain Management, shares findings from research on the 2018 - 2019 U.S. - China trade war. He explains how tariffs reduced trade between the two countries, with U.S. ocean exports of low-value commodities like soybeans hit hardest, while high-value air shipments to China remained resilient. On the import side, U.S. air shipments of Chinese electronics declined, but low-value ocean imports were largely unaffected. Dresner notes that these same patterns are re-emerging in today’s trade war, highlighting the continued vulnerability of commodity shippers and high-value Chinese manufacturers, and the importance of diversifying markets.
