The Small Paraklesis is a beautiful and deeply comforting supplicatory service in the Orthodox Church, dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. It is chanted in times of distress, sorrow, or personal struggles, as well as during the Dormition Fast (August 1–14), alternating with the Great Paraklesis.
This service consists of prayers and hymns that seek the intercession of the Theotokos, asking for spiritual and physical healing, guidance, and protection. The structure of the Small Paraklesis is similar to the Matins service, featuring psalms, petitions, and a supplicatory canon composed by Theosteriktos the Monastic (or possibly Theophanes the Hymnographer).
It is a deeply personal and communal prayer, reminding the faithful of the compassion and love of the Theotokos, who intercedes before God on behalf of those who call upon her. Many Orthodox Christians turn to this service in times of difficulty, illness, or uncertainty, finding solace in its words and melodies.
