This is Hackberry Creek just outside of the mining town of Superior Arizona.
This small creek and it's ancient waterfall see only a few short weeks of water each year.
A bumpy dirt road entrance, best attempted with a 4x4, then a short walk down the creek through the Hoodoo's and high cliffs formed roughly 18 million years earlier, makes Hackberry Creek a great daytrip in Central Arizona.
The land surrounding Hackberry Creek is a highly contested acreage quietly named "Oak Flat".
Oak Flat is home to the largest copper deposit in the nation.
The copper industry is intent on extracting the ore, but in doing so will destroy much of the Oak Flat area, including this primeval piece of the Sonoran Desert.
With an estimated 40 billion pounds of copper ore deposited over a mile underground, the planned extraction will be the largest attempt ever made to extract ore by digging below the load and mining from the bottom up which will cause the land above the load to sink in on itself by as much as a mile.
Native Americans lay claim to the land and have been highly opposed to the plans of the foreign mining company, resulting in U.S. congress involvement.
