Sumatra - Loss of natural habitat

The destruction of the natural habitat of tigers and elephants in southern Sumatra has led to a higher incidence of attacks by these animals on the local villagers.
More and more of the land in the area has been deforested to provide arable land for growing coffee. But tigers, forced to retreat by the burgeoning plantations, have been provoked into attacking villagers in the region.
In the Southern Sumatran province of Lampung four locals have been killed this year. Others more fortunate have survived attacks by "man-eaters".
Elephants have also been brought into conflict with the human population by the reduction in its habitat. Young elephants are captured and trained to be working beasts. When they are first caught they are tethered with chains to an animal which has already been tamed.
But wild elephants have gone on the rampage, destroying the homes of villagers in an effort to find food.
