Crossing Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico to Everglades City

Due north from the Florida Keys are the Florida Everglades. After visiting Key West and Boot Key Harbor we crossed the Florida Bay from Marathon with the intention of visiting Everglades City. Everglades City by land is a side road off of alligator alley, the southernmost east-west crossing of the Florida Peninsula. But we weren't approaching by land. We had a 90-mile trip across the Florida bay and a good chunk of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Rod and Gun Club is an historic structure that has hosted five US presidents and numerous well-known guests. The Rod and Gun Club is still a great place to stay when you're hunting, fishing, or just visiting Everglades City. We ate lunch there before touring the club.

After watching airboats packed with people pass by Sea Star everyday headed into the Everglades, we decided to take a self-guided Everglades swamp tour in our dinghy. Maybe not the best idea we ever came up with but an adventure for sure. Ultimately, we survived the trip and can now share the story of the animals that we saw (and the ones we didn't see). Airboats in the everglades are a way of life and big business for the tour guides.
