In 1999 the 2nd Chicago Line Up of PDP went to Hawaii to rehearse and perform 5 nights in a row at the Night club "Wave Waikiki" - We had an entourage of about 25 people, and almost all of them stayed at my Family home on Oahu; people were on air mattresses everywhere and some even camped in the back yard, we had a beautiful time. It was an exciting time of re-invention, and new musical exploration. When I look back on it now, we were really musically brave: we were experimenting heavily & forging a new sound with jazz, live instrument House music, Complex orchestral arrangements, future rhythms and sweeping instrumental passages.
I wanted to get the band out of Chicago and out from under the microscope of critics and some fans who were critical of me for having changed the line up of pdp again. So we packed up and went to Hawaii and camped at my Dad's house to let the new thing bud, flower and grow in a nurturing, neutral environment. It was a super lovely trip, filled with hiking, swimming, cooking all together in the back yard (and teasing each other about who snored the loudest cause we were all sleeping on the floor next to each other :) We got a nice warm welcome from the folks back home, and I felt like we brought something refreshing.... I was so happy to watch these diamonds I had met on the mainland discover Hawaii, and for Hawaii to discover them...
