A Morning in Akranes – This Peaceful Icelandic Town Surprised Us

We spent a quiet morning exploring Akranes, a small coastal town in West Iceland that totally surprised us. With just a few hours to visit, we set out to see some of the town’s unique highlights and left feeling like we’d uncovered a hidden gem.
We started at the Akranes shipwreck, a moody and dramatic scene right on the coast. From there, we visited the Akranes Lighthouse, home to actually two lighthouses. One from 1918 and one that is newer that you can climb. Sadly this wasn't open the time we were there.
Before wrapping up, we drove through town to admire some of the local murals that give this place a real sense of character.
If you’re heading toward the Snæfellsnes Peninsula or driving the west coast, Akranes is an easy and peaceful detour and one we’re glad we made.
