On a trip through Peru, we had this vision of Rob riding the ancient reed-mats that some historians argue pre-date Hawaiian surfing. And so he did. But he also rode his alaia — the traditional board of ancient Hawaiian surfers -- in that same session. Seeing them side by side and beneath the feet of Machado, history was a bit better understood.
