An Ian Rush hat-trick helped Liverpool into round 4, but controversy surrounded the first after he appeared to kick the ball out of Craig Forrest's hands. His second came when he profited from a mistake by David Linighan, but Town replied when Bruce Grobbelaar's clearance rebounded off Ian Marshall into the net. After Rush had put Liverpool further in front, Town were awarded a penalty when Neil Thompson's cross hit Mark Wright's arm. Paul Mason dispatched the spot-kick in front of the Kop, but there was to be no upset. Extended coverage from ITV features post-match interviews with Ian Rush and Craig Forrest.
