Title: "Cognitive flexibility as the gateway to successful decision-making, creative thinking and optimal brain function."
Cognitive flexibility is the ability to change your mind in responding successfully to the challenges posed by an often-unpredictable world. It extends our notion of intelligence, as measured by IQ testing, and contributes to important educational and everyday abilities, such as innovative planning, decision-making and artistic endeavour, while also being a major function of the frontal lobes of the human brain. Cognitive inflexibility may result in rigid thinking sometimes associated with mental health disorder and habit-bound behaviour. In this talk, Professor Trevor Robbins will also describe how cognitive flexibility can be measured in the lab and potentially trained across the lifespan. Professor Robbins will also show how cognitive flexibility requires the optimal functioning of the frontal lobes of the brain, using such research techniques as brain imaging.
