I found these Walkingsticks mating during a break in a thunderstorm. My puppy was too curious about what I was staring at. Filmed on August 19, 2018 in the Missouri Ozarks, USA, with a Sony AX-100.
This species is native to the US and Canada and is the most common Phasmid in North America. Walking Sticks feed on the foliage of deciduous trees and shrubs, especially oaks and hazelnuts.
Females drop eggs singly on the forest floor. The eggs overwinter in leaf litter and then hatch in the spring. Nymphs become adults during the summer and fall. Adults die in freezing weather.
