Today we are checking out the new DEWALT Electric Vehicle (EV) 240V Level 2 Charger with up to 40 Amps, App Control Bluetooth & Wi-Fi, CSA Certified Indoor/Outdoor NEMA 14-50 Plug Wall Mounted Charging Station with 25 ft. Cable.

I honestly expected installing an EV Charger would be significantly more difficult, but the DEWALT EV charger was a breeze to install, setup and get running. It’s honestly just a matter of installing the mounting bracket, attaching the unit, and plugging the unit in. The whole process took me just shy of 5 minutes.
Installing the mounting bracket was straight forward and just required the use of a drill to properly drive the included mounting screws into the stud. Once your bracket was properly installed, the charger mounts onto the bracket via two hooks on the back of the unit and then gets secured onto the bracket with a set screw that attaches from the bottom. The power cord is 12” long so you will need to ensure that the outlet you will be using is either directly underneath the unit or to the left/right of the unit no further up than the lower quarter of the unit as the plug will not reach anything further.
I will say that with the charger being DeWALT yellow, it really sticks out when mounted in the garage especially on an empty wall. The unit itself is sturdy, well built, and rugged. The “cage” that’s on the unit should help prevent it from getting damaged if you bump into it while moving stuff around in the garage. I mounted the charger in the center of our garage and the 25ft is just long enough to go from the wall to the far rear corner of the car, but it didn't leave much slack. To take full advantage of the unit you will need the appropriate socket/circuit breaker. We haven't had the chance to upgrade the breaker and outlet, however with the use of an adapter we were able to make the charger work for the time being until we can upgrade the plug and wiring to the full potential. If you do decide to use an adapter and run the unit on smaller wiring/breaker, you MUST check the chart included in the instruction manual for the appropriate power output levels. Our circuit is currently limited to 20amps, so our overall output on the unit is limited to 16 amps for the time being (This can be adjusted in the app under the settings menu). Even without using the unit to its full potential we can still get 3x the charging rate than a standard outlet. The charger starts charging as soon as the charger is plugged into the car, unless you have the main unit set to only operate on a schedule, then power will only be delivered during the set time frame. If you don’t setup the settings in the app, your car will essentially act as the guide as to what power it will receive from the unit and for how long. There are no buttons (other than a network reset) or touch screens on the main unit. Everything is operated through the app. The app allows you to manually control the charging, setup schedules, adjust the power output, lock the charger, as well as give you a history of charges and estimated energy usage and costs.
The charging handle is ergonomic and robust, and plugged and locked seamlessly into the power port of my car. Overall, I’m very pleased with the unit and just how simple it was to get up and running. No issues or complaints to report. A solid addition to our home for sure!
