Metroid Dread is a 2D action-adventure game that serves as a direct sequel to 2002's Metroid Fusion, concluding the main 2D story arc of the franchise. Players control bounty hunter Samus Aran as she explores the mysterious and dangerous planet ZDR, all while being relentlessly hunted by nearly indestructible robots.
Gameplay & Story
The game retains the classic side-scrolling, non-linear exploration gameplay of the series (inspiring the "Metroidvania" genre) but adds modern controls, a fluid movement system, and stealth mechanics.
Exploration: The core loop involves navigating a large, interconnected alien world, finding new abilities and weapon upgrades that allow access to previously unreachable areas.
The Hunted Becomes the Hunter: A key new feature is the E.M.M.I. (Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifiers), research robots that patrol specific zones. Samus cannot destroy them with conventional weapons and must use stealth and agility to evade them, creating a tense "cat-and-mouse" dynamic.
Narrative: Samus is sent to ZDR to investigate a mysterious transmission suggesting the deadly X parasite—thought to be extinct—still exists. Upon arrival, she is attacked, stripped of most of her abilities, and trapped deep underground, forcing her to find a way to the surface while uncovering the planet's dark secrets involving the ancient Chozo race.
Origins
Metroid Dread had a long and fabled development history:
Initial Conception (Mid-2000s): The game was originally conceived by producer Yoshio Sakamoto for the Nintendo DS around 2005.
Development Hell: Due to the technical limitations of the DS hardware at the time, the team couldn't achieve the "dreadful" atmosphere and intimidating antagonist Sakamoto envisioned, and the project was canceled.
Revival (2021): After seeing the work of the Spanish developer MercurySteam on Metroid: Samus Returns (a 2017 remake of Metroid II), Sakamoto was confident they could realize his vision on the more powerful Nintendo Switch.
Release: The game was officially announced at E3 2021 and released on October 8, 2021, to critical acclaim, eventually becoming the best-selling Metroid game in the franchise's history.
