The microcar scene is heating up once again, and this time the spotlight shines on Astraux, a Dubai-based company stepping into the market with a new range of tiny electric vehicles designed for the urban environment. While microcars aren’t a new concept, the rise of electric motors and compact batteries has sparked a surge in popularity, making small, affordable EVs more relevant than ever. Astraux is now aiming to carve its place among competitors with the AL series, a lineup of budget-friendly, city-ready EVs that could redefine everyday commuting.

For those who’ve spotted Astraux ads across social media, you might already be familiar with their unique branding. Interestingly, the company isn’t limited to cars—they also market AI-driven toy robots called Aimon, digital companions reminiscent of Tamagotchis. But now, the company is scaling up with something much bigger: affordable microcars that can legally be driven by individuals as young as 14, depending on local laws.

The Astraux AL series is currently available for presale until November 4, 2025, with prices starting at just €5,990 (around $7,000). That’s for the base model, while the higher-end AL7 Pro comes in at €9,990—though it isn’t part of the presale discount. For perspective, rival microcar brands like Microlino, which revives the BMW Isetta design, sell for nearly double the price, giving Astraux a significant cost advantage.

Structurally, the AL microcars use a steel load-bearing body paired with a monocoque shell. Nearly 80% of the car’s exterior is glass, offering exceptional visibility, though it raises questions about crash safety. Still, Astraux claims the design prioritizes accessibility, with large doors and multiple hatches for easy entry and usability.

Under the hood—or rather, at the rear axle—the ALs are powered by a modest 10 kW motor running at 72 volts. The performance isn’t groundbreaking, but for an urban commuter, it’s more than enough. The top speed of the AL7 Pro is capped at 90 km/h, making it perfect for city streets but clearly unsuitable for highways. With a curb weight of only 510 kg, it delivers efficiency and nimble handling, though drivers must remain mindful of stability and speed.

When it comes to range, Astraux offers a spectrum: the entry-level AL6 reaches about 80 km per charge, while the AL7 Pro extends up to 150 km thanks to its 10.58 kWh battery. These numbers, if achieved under real-world conditions, are more than enough for daily commutes, quick errands, or even as a second household car to reduce reliance on gas-powered vehicles.

Inside, the cabin embraces simplicity. A two-seater bench and minimal dashboard controls dominate the space, with just the basics like a gear lever, pedals, and steering wheel. Yet Astraux has spiced things up with quirky features, including an on-board projector that can transform the car into a karaoke booth or gaming station. There are also hints of drone companion integration, though details remain vague.

One unique aspect of Astraux’s approach is its appeal to teenage drivers, allowing younger individuals to get behind the wheel earlier than traditional licensing ages in some regions. However, this remains heavily dependent on local traffic laws.

The AL series will make its public debut at the IFA Exhibition in Berlin from September 5 to 9, 2025, where enthusiasts can see firsthand if Astraux can back up its bold promises. With striking affordability, practical range, and futuristic features, the Astraux AL could mark a new chapter for microcars, especially for those seeking an eco-friendly, fun, and budget-conscious way to navigate urban streets.
