1978 heralds the rise of the GS with the GS 80 taking two gold medals at the international Six Days Enduro. In the true #SpiritOfGS, the bike was developed by an in-house team without official orders.
Its legendary appeal proved undeniable: This GS predecessor was the proof of concept for pure enjoyment both on and off-road.
The GS 80 was officially launched in 1980 as the BMW R 80 G/S. It was the perfect synthesis of off-road and on-road riding, giving riders full control in any situation—ultimately creating the segment for large, comfortable dual-sport motorcycles, a segment that BMW Motorrad still dominates to this day.
