The book we’ll be reviewing today is So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport. The title of the book was inspired by an interview Comedian Steve Martin had with Charlie Rose back in 2007.

When talking about career advice Steve Martin said "Nobody ever takes note of [my advice], because it's not the answer they wanted to hear," "What they want to hear is ‘Here's how you get an agent, here's how you write a script,' . . . but I always say, ‘Be so good they can't ignore you.'
In this video we’ll be discussing the four rules Cal Newport has for picking a fulfilling career.
Rule #1: Don’t Follow Your Passion
Cal says in the book that following your passion is dangerous advice.....following your passion can lead to job hopping and increased self doubt
Rule #2: Be So Good They Can’t Ignore You
Let’s talk about the two different mindsets we can have when it comes to our work. One is the passion mindset. With this mindset you focus on what the world offers you. With this mindset you’ll likely focus on doing the least amount of work possible to get what you desire such as money or popularity.
The other mindset is the craftsman mindset..
Unlike the passion mindset where you focus on what you can get from the world, with the craftsman mindset you focus on the value you can offer the world. The author believes the craftsman mindset is the foundation for creating work you love.
Rule #3: Turn Down a Promotion
As you develop your skills and offer more value, it may lead to offers that can increase your responsibility and salary, but make sure the glamourous offer doesn’t take you away from the craft you love.
One example could be with teaching. A teacher may be the best teacher at their school and is incredibly talented. This could lead to that teacher being offered an administrative role like being the principle. The job offers more money and responsibility, but it also leads to less time spent in the classroom teaching. If you’ve worked hard enough to get to the point where you love being a teacher, it may not be worth trading that job for being a principal, even though it offers more money.
Rule #4: Think Small, Act Big
The rule talked about the importance of having rare and valuable skills before you have an important mission. One example could be if you want to be a philanthropist and donate large sums of money to charity, you first need a valuable skill or product people are willing to pay for.
