Nagaland: NSCN leader calls for single peace deal to end conflict

In an appeal for unity within the Naga political landscape, N. Kitovi Zhimomi, Ato Kilonser of the GPRN/NSCN, on April 16 called for unity among the political groups and a single solution to the long-running Indo-Naga issue. Speaking at a “reunion programme” held at the Khehoyi camp in Niuland district of Nagaland Kitovi said the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position should be merged into one draft that includes all Naga groups.

His comments come after the group retook control of the Khehoyi camp on March 22, following internal disputes. The camp, earlier known as the “Unification Camp,” will now be officially called the GPRN/NSCN Designated Camp.

Kitovi stressed that the final peace agreement should not belong to one group alone while adding that there should be one agreement for all Nagas — not just for NNPG or NSCN-IM. He also urged the Government of India to combine both the major agreements and create a common draft for lasting peace.

He also spoke about the importance of thinking about future generations. While acknowledging the benefits of the 16-Point Agreement, he said a new roadmap is needed. “More than 90,000 educated youth in Nagaland are unemployed. For our children’s future, we need a clear direction,” he said.

During his address, Kitovi called for an end to internal violence while adding that many have died so far and yet a solution has not been reached. He urged Naga civil society and political groups to unite and focus on dialogue and understanding instead of conflict.

Kiyeto Zhimomi from the Naga Army also spoke at the event, saying the fighters are tired of years of internal conflict. “Our families have suffered. Too many children have lost parents,” he said.

Kitovi ended by saying that the Naga people are losing hope in the peace process. He also said that people are tired and they want peace in their lives again.
