With a successful return in 2022 after three years off, The Cedar Cultural Center is proud to present the signature Global Roots Festival once again — returning to an annual celebration. From September 25-27, 2023 this beloved event will occupy The Cedar’s hall, embodying the organization's mission to promote intercultural appreciation and understanding through the presentation of global music. The festival offers accessible, free, and family friendly opportunities to hear innovative and unique artists from across the globe, right here in Cedar Riverside, Minneapolis.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, September 25-27, 2023 will feature a carefully curated lineup of both international and U.S.-based artists representing a multitude of sounds: Ana Everling, a Moldova-born and Chicago-based vocalist opens the festival with haunting sounds inspired by Romanian folklore; House of Waters, a kaleidoscopic trio on Snarky Puppy’s GroundUP label exploring the bridges between jazz, psychedelic, indie rock, and West African music; Madalitso Band, a Malawi street-busking duo blending Chichewa and Ngoni ceremonial music into irresistibly danceable bliss; Ethiocolor, led by legendary Melaku Belay, brings intoxicating funk grooves through traditional Ethiopian Azmari instruments and dance; La Perla, a trio of Colombian women weaving gaitas (bagpipes) with hand drums and light vocal harmonies; and closing out the festivities is Waahli, a Montreal rapper of Haitian descent performing tri-lingually in French, English, and Creole.
Lineup:
Monday, September 25, 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show - Ana Everling and House of Waters
Tuesday, September 26, 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show - Madalitso Band and Ethiocolor
