Must See! - Grand Portage National Monument, Minnesota

In 1790, 70% of the world's fur trading - happened in Grand Portage Minnesota. Set on the shore of the Great Lake Superior, traders came from all over the world to this great meeting place. From this location in Northern Minnesota - a canoe or boat could reach all ends of the earth in a span of 8 weeks. It was a central and significant place for the Natives and the Europeans to trade furs and goods.

And the Grand Portage National Monument that now stands in the very location where so much history took place - is an absolute must see if you find yourself in this neck of the woods.

The Pigeon river which was the connection to the great interior waterways of North America, has many treacherous waterfalls which led the Natives to creating the 8-mile portage to the shores of Lake Superior. The same path which you can still walk on today!

Stop in and see the Museum, the moose display, enjoy a short film, walk through the Ojibwe village, check out the canoes in the warehouse, smell the aroma of the kitchen, and finally step into the Great Hall. And all along the way you will find National Park staff dressed in the attire from those old days, and they are ready and willing to share so much information about this neat place.

Great for people of all ages - kids will love the hands on side of the park. So much to see and do! And its a free stop - although donations can help!

And if you make it up there - you should absolutely travel a little more north to find Grand Portage State Park - and check out the High Falls on the Pigeon River.
