A blowhole is a coastal geological feature formed when sea caves or tunnels eroded by wave action develop a vertical shaft that opens to the surface. When waves enter the cave, they trap and compress air, increasing internal pressure according to Boyle’s law. This pressure forces water upward through the narrow blowhole opening, and by Bernoulli’s principle, the reduced cross-section accelerates the water, ejecting it as a high-speed jet or spray. As the wave recedes, pressure drops and air is drawn back in, creating a rhythmic “breathing” effect. In some cases, the air and water inside resonate with incoming waves, amplifying both sound and spray, much like an organ pipe.
