Falls in older adults are a major cause of disability and can lead to frailty. This video discusses a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in France that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in reducing fall incidence among robust older adults aged 80 and above. The study will assess whether a 12-month personalized multimodal follow-up by APNs can reduce fall incidence and delay transitions to pre-frailty or impaired mobility. The RCT is a hybrid type 1, multicenter, open-label, superiority trial conducted in seven medical centers in the Pays de la Loire region, France. A total of 386 participants will be randomized 1:1 after an initial comprehensive geriatric assessment. The intervention group will receive follow-up by APNs at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, with primary and secondary outcomes reassessed at 12 months. The study will provide evidence on the clinical, economic, and implementation impact of APN-led fall prevention in community-dwelling very old adults.
