UAE Foreign Minister meets with Syrian President Assad in Damascus

The foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday, his second visit to Damascus since November 2021, in the latest sign of Syria’s warming relations with the Gulf state.

They discussed strengthening economic ties, and the UAE affirmed its support for a political solution to end the Syrian conflict, according to the UAE state news agency, WAM.

The Syrian government became an international pariah when it violently cracked down on protests in 2011, sparking a civil war that killed half a million people, and left half of the country’s pre-war population internally displaced or living abroad as refugees.
