Ephesians 3
Paul begins by explaining that he is in prison because he has been preaching the message that God wants the Gentiles included in His family. He calls this truth a mystery that God revealed to him. In earlier generations people did not fully understand it, but now the Spirit has made it clear to the apostles and prophets. The mystery is that Gentiles are now fellow heirs with Israel, members of the same body, and share in the promises of Christ.

Paul says that God gave him the responsibility to share this message even though he sees himself as the least deserving of all believers. He explains that God’s plan is to show His wisdom through the church, not only on earth but also to spiritual rulers in the heavenly realms. This plan was always God’s intention and is now fulfilled in Christ. Because of Christ we can approach God with confidence and freedom.

Paul tells the believers not to lose heart because of his suffering. He wants them to know that his trials are actually working for their benefit.

Then Paul moves into a prayer for them. He prays that God will strengthen them with power through His Spirit in their inner being. He prays that Christ will dwell in their hearts through faith and that they will be rooted and grounded in love. He asks that they would grasp the full width, length, height, and depth of Christ’s love, a love that surpasses all human knowledge. He wants them to be filled with the fullness of God.

Paul ends with a beautiful praise to God. He says that God is able to do far more than anything we can ask or imagine, and that His power is at work within us. He gives glory to God through the church and through Christ for all generations forever.
