This video explains the difference between self-love and selfishness (0:29).
Selfishness is born from an unsatisfied mind (0:45). It leads individuals to have expectations of themselves and others (1:10), and when these are not met, they chase after these expectations, becoming solely focused on their own happiness, pleasure, and advantage, without considering others (1:39).
Self-love, on the other hand, is born from compassion, understanding, and acceptance (2:03). When you understand and accept who you are, you become more compassionate towards yourself, allowing time for healing and developing inner qualities (2:11). This patience and understanding also extend to others, leading to a more selfless and generous nature (2:36). Self-love fosters contentment and gratitude for what one has (3:39).
The video concludes with a teaching from the Buddha: if you love yourself, you must guard your mind from evil thoughts like jealousy, hatred, aversion, and envy (4:18). By protecting your mind from unwholesome thoughts, you protect both yourself and others (4:31).
