Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals in India, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. In 2024, Dussehra will be observed on Sunday, October 12, marking the culmination of the nine-day festival of Navratri. It is a day when Hindus across the world come together to celebrate Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana, as well as the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
Dussehra is more than just a celebration of ancient mythological tales; it is a reminder of the timeless values of courage, righteousness, and devotion that continue to resonate with people today.
The word “Dussehra” is derived from the Sanskrit words “Dasha” (meaning ten) and “Hara” (meaning defeat), referring to the victory of Lord Rama over the ten-headed demon king, Ravana. The festival also marks the day when Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura after a fierce battle that lasted nine days, symbolising the ultimate triumph of good over evil.
In Hindu culture, Dussehra is seen as a celebration of righteousness. It represents the victory of Dharma (moral and righteous duty) over Adharma (unrighteousness), and the eternal truth that no matter how powerful evil forces may seem, good will always prevail.
