📦 Unboxing
First up: I open the box and show everything that comes inside. With the MK90 you’ll see the optical tube assembly (OTA), a Vixen-style dovetail plate plus mounting base, lens cover, dust plug and some basic paperwork.
I show the dovetail mount and note that it uses the Vixen-style dovetail plate so you can mount it on a variety of tripods/mounts.
-----------------------------------------------
🔍 Setup & Zoom Test
I mount the OTA on a suitable tripod or azimuth mount (mentioned for portability). I show how easy (or otherwise) the mount/dovetail is to attach, and how stable the setup is.
Then I insert the included zoom eyepiece (or any eyepiece I choose) and test the focusing. I remark on how the focuser feels: smoothness, fineness of adjustment, how the image comes into focus.
I conduct a zoom test – that is, I start at low power for a wide field, then crank up magnification to see how the telescope handles detail and stability. For example, I might aim at a distant tree or building to simulate terrestrial zoom, then move to a higher magnification for moonscape or bird feathers.
-----------------------------------------------
🐦 Bird Watching Session
Transitioning to terrestrial use: I take the telescope outdoors during daytime, find some interesting bird or distant object, and show how the MK90 performs.
-----------------------------------------------
🌕 Moon & Night Sky Session
For lunar/planetary use: I wait until dusk/night, point the MK90 at the moon, maybe also a bright planet (Jupiter or Saturn) if visible.
I show the view: craters, maria, the terminator line, shadows, detail on the moon’s surface. I point out how the high focal length and decent aperture help with magnification and resolution. The product description explicitly mentions “detailed lunar and planetary observations”.
I show image quality: how crisp the edges are, contrast, brightness, any sign of stray-light or aberrations. Also I note how easy it is to focus and maintain the view.
I highlight any accessories used (eyepiece, maybe smartphone adapter, Barlow lens if applicable) and mention that the MK90 supports 1.25″ threads for accessories/photography.
While the 90mm aperture is good for many objects, atmospheric seeing and mount stability still matter; high magnification may show jitter or shake; not ideal for deep-sky (faint nebulae) but strong for moon/planets/terrestrial.
----------------------------------------------
✅ Pros & 🔍 Cons
Pros
Compact & portable: good for “grab-and-go” astronomy or nature outings. (Mention ~1.3-1.4 kg spec)
High focal length gives good magnification with relatively small tube – good for lunar/planetary detail and distant terrestrial viewing.
Quality Maksutov optics with meniscus corrector lens design, intended to boost contrast and reduce collimation hassle.
Flexible use: both terrestrial (bird watching/long-range) and astronomical viewing (moon/planets).
Cons (Limitations)
With an f/13.9 design, the field of view will be narrower and the brightness of dim objects will be less compared to faster scopes; so for fast-moving birds or very wide scenic views it might feel a little restrictive.
High magnification demands a stable mount/tripod; any shake or unstable mounting will degrade the experience.
Not the ideal tool for wide-field deep-sky views (nebulae, large star fields) – that’s just a typical tradeoff of this type of telescope.
----------------------------------------------
📝 Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a telescope that bridges the gap between bird-watching / terrestrial usage and some serious lunar/planetary work, the SVBONY MK90 is a compelling choice. It ticks the portability box, gives high focal length in a compact design, and seems well engineered for contrast and ease of use. In this video I’ll show you real-world performance, so you’ll be able to judge whether it fits your use case (whether you’re on a balcony in Mumbai, or heading out into the countryside).
Let me know in the comments if there’s a particular target you’d like me to test (Moon close up, Jupiter’s bands, a bird in flight), and I’ll try to include it in the next video. Until then — clear skies and happy viewing!
