Alois Hába (1893-1973) was a Czech composer who championed microtonality in concert music. Already enjoying a successful, prolific, and pioneering career; in 1933 Hába became a professor at the Prague Conservatory. A political dissident, his second opera "The New Earth" took the Ukrainian Holodomor (the Soviet "Terror-Famine") as its subject leading to the premiere being cancelled. His work was later banned by the Nazis who closed the Prague Conservatory and censored many creatives. After World War II, Hába was reinstated but obligated to teach and compose more tonally mainstream offerings. He would later say it was not until his retirement (1953) that he had artistic freedom. In 1968 Hába composed this Partita for legendary saxophonist Sigurd Raschér.
