Hello everyone and welcome back to Old Dad's Modeling Mess. In todays video I answer a few viewer questions about Model building and 3D printers. I got several questions about 3D printers from my other videos so I'm going to do my best to answer those questions for you. None of this is directed at or should this be taken in anyway as me being snooty or obnoxious towards anyone. "Can you print a tank or a model? Are they worth it? What about harmful chemicals and smells? What if I can't afford it or my better half might get upset?"
"Can you just print a tank or model instead of building one?" The answer is yes but I wouldn't recommend it. I have printed a couple of tanks I found online for free and the biggest problem with them are they are low quality and low poly. What that means is they are missing most of the good details that make your builds stand out. Things like grab handles, nuts, bolts & rivets are missing, stuff like that. Then there is the low poly issue and what that is things are simplified or look cartoon-ish. Things that should be round are shaped like octagons instead of being round. If you want higher quality 3D print files you will need to pay for them. If you just print a tank you lose the building part of it which is why we do this to begin with.
"What about all the harmful chemicals and smells?" Most 3D printing channels are sponsored and everything is pretty much given to them for free to make their videos. I use water washable ABS like resin and it is absolutely amazing there is no harsh smells, no nasty chemicals, none of that. When your print is done you drain off the excess resin and then you can use your kitchen sink and sprayer to clean off your print. As long as you wash your hands and rinse out your sink you will be fine. You can print your stuff up, wash it off in the sink and then take it outside and let mother nature cure it for you. Later on you can save up and buy a wash and cure machine.
"Well I can't afford a 3D printer can I?" Yes you can, normally you can pick up a small resin printer for around $150. With the holidays coming up they should be closer to the $125. I know what your thinking, "Old Dad that's $150 I don't have". Hold of on buying those couple of model kits or workable tracks, there's your $$$.
"What if I'm not tech savy?" If you can work your TV remote or turn on your phone you can work a 3D printer. 95% of files that are out there are "pre supported" which means that whatever it is your trying to print is set up so all you have to do is add the file to your printer and hit the print button.
Is 3D printing worth it?" Yes it absolutely is and I fell honestly every builder needs a 3D printer in their arsenal of tools. Why pay $30 -$80 on workable track links for 1 model you can buy and print them for all of your kits for way less money? I can print tracks for 12-15 kits and I have less than $20 cost in them. You can't do that anywhere unless you have a 3D printer.
To keep your better half in a good mood you can print things for them they like. My wife loves any and all animals so I printer her some of her favorite dogs (beagles) and a couple of wolves. She loved them and any concern about the money that was spent was lost. My son is into dragons so I printed him one with glowing eyes and I was a super hero for a few minutes in his eyes, that was all I needed lol. My son found a Godzilla file so we did some extra work to it (detailing in Blender) and then we printed it. Family time well spent and he showed it at the fair and won a couple of ribbons. That might not seem cool but for 4H projects which Godzilla was he gets extra credit so it helped his grades. So if your hit with the "your always spending or getting stuff just for you" just remember these can be used for all by all in the household so it's a family purchase not a "you purchase". If that doesn't help your case on getting 1 I'm sorry that's the best I can do lol...
