Wide Angle Portraits Can Look AMAZING | Gavin Hoey

Why don’t portrait photographers use wide-angle lenses in the studio? The answer feels fairly obvious… because wide-angle lenses distort facial features, and if you back up, you also include things in your studio space that you don't want to see and have to fix in Photoshop.

In this tutorial video, photographer Gavin Hoey challenges the preconceived notion that "wide-angle lenses and portraits don’t mix" by turning the problems into artistic solutions. For Gavin, this starts with the studio background. By choosing to work with a basic white background, Gavin makes the unconventional decision to keep it in the photos, even when he can clearly see the edges.

Next, Gavin tackles the issue of wide-angle lenses distorting facial features. Using a quick demonstration, he explains that it’s the close distance to your subject that distorts the image, not the lens.

So, once you know how distortion works, you can use that knowledge to deliberately create scenarios where it looks amazing. That’s precisely what Gavin does in three quick photo sessions that maximize both depth of field and controlled distortion to create uniquely eye-catching images.
