Seventy-three years after D-Day, tourism in the French town of St Mère Eglise still centres on it's role in the D-Day invasion. John Steele, whose parachute famously caught the tower of the church, remains commemorated by a dummy paratrooper still hanging from the front of the tower.
Utah Beach, which lies 16km to the east of the town, was the location of the amphibious landings principally undertaken by United States Army troops.
The assault on Omaha Beach, some 50km from Utah Beach by road, was the responsibility of United States Army troops, with contributions from the British, Canadian, and Free French navies.
Just above Omaha Beach lies the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. It covers 172 acres, and contains the remains of 9,387 American military dead, most of whom were killed during the invasion of Normandy and ensuing military operations in World War II.
This video is intended as a short tribute, not just to the Americans who lost their lives, but to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War Two...
