This concerto was Ravel’s penultimate composition, and his aim was to highlight the soloist's virtuosity, without seeking to show profundity much in the manner of Mozart. It was originally based on Basque folk themes, but he was impressed by jazz and Negro spirituals while touring the US. He modeled this movement on the theme from Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, with a melody unfolding over 34 bars. Ravel said "That flowing phrase! How I worked over it bar by bar! It nearly killed me!"[
He conducted the premiere in Paris in 1932 and in performances of the major cities in Europe and the US. It has been recorded by pianists, orchestras and conductors from all over the world.
