Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) was one of the most celebrated and prolific Italian composers of the 19th century. His operas continue to be performed worldwide to great acclaim.

WILLIAM TELL ("Guillaume Tell") was Rossini's thirty-ninth and final opera. This four-act opera is based on a play (Wilhelm Tell) by Friedrich Schiller. It tells the story of William Tell, an archer and Swiss hero who assisted in the liberation of Switzerland from Austrian occupation. The opera is rarely performed, but the overture (the introduction to the opera), remains a favorite of audiences worldwide.

The overture is divided into four sections. This last section, (the Finale) “The March of the Swiss Soldiers” has established itself as the most widely known part of the overture. This Finale has been used in Mickey Mouse cartoons, radio and TV versions of The Lone Ranger, and has since made its way into many cartoons, commercials, and movies.
