Fix Steam Proton Game Not Launching on Linux – 3 Easy Fixes!

In this video, I cover three proven solutions that have helped me get Windows games working on Steam Proton when they refused to launch on Linux. These fixes assume:

✅ You've checked ProtonDB and confirmed the game can run on Linux
✅ You're using a GPU that supports Vulkan
✅ You've already tried different versions of Proton (official and Proton-GE)

🛠️ Solution 1: Install the Latest GPU Driver / Disable Radeon Driver

Ensure your AMD or NVIDIA drivers are up to date.
Most AMD setups use the Mesa open-source driver, which may not be installed or active by default.
If you're using a Radeon R9 200/300 series GPU, blacklist the radeon kernel module to enable Vulkan.

🧹 Solution 2: Delete the Wine Prefix
Each Proton installation creates a Wine prefix (a simulated Windows environment).
Switching between Proton versions (especially Proton-GE) can corrupt this prefix.
Deleting the prefix can resolve issues, but it will remove settings and saves.

🖥️ Find and delete the prefix manually or use:
rm -r ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/[gameID]

🧾 Solution 3: Don’t Use the NTFS File System
Proton does not work reliably with games installed on NTFS partitions.
Use a native Linux file system like Ext4 for your Steam Library.
