What does it look like when you have the opportunity to make a difference, not only for our generation, but for future generations as well?
Sheila Gujrathi MD is a TEDx speaker, bestselling author, health investor, and board leader serving on six boards joins host Natalie Benamou to talk about her career path. Listen in to this conversation about leadership, authenticity, and her new bestselling book The Mirror Effect.
Dr. Gujrathi shares her journey from physician to biotech CEO and now chairwoman and board director. Her new bestselling book, The Mirror Effect, is a reflection on lessons learned, inner growth, and the importance of creating communities where women leaders see themselves represented.
How can we see ourselves in the room?
Throughout her career in biotech and board leadership, Dr. Gujrathi often found herself as the “only one” in the room. She shared:
“When you don’t see those mirrors—people who look like you, that you relate to, people who see, hear, and understand you—you just don’t know if you really belong there.”
That realization became the foundation of The Mirror Effect a call for leaders and board directors to create environments where everyone can see their reflection and know they belong.
What are some lessons from a Career of Impact
Dr. Gujrathi’s journey began in medicine and evolved through executive leadership and entrepreneurship. Along the way, she learned powerful lessons about growth, purpose, and the inner barriers that hold leaders back.
“I didn’t realize how much my internal thought patterns and beliefs were holding me back from being the best leader I could be.”
She identifies those barriers as F.I.D.S. — Fear, Insecurity, Doubt, and Shame — and believes awareness is the first step toward change. By breaking free from those limiting beliefs, she says, leaders can operate from a place of confidence, compassion, and clarity.
What is the power of self-reflection?
Writing The Mirror Effect became an act of introspection for Dr. Gujrathi and was deeply personal.
“It’s also been a journey of self-exploration, inner exploration, and also gathering all my lessons learned, and insights, and what I hoped my younger self would have known before, and now I realize it’s going to be very impactful for the next generation of women leaders — including my daughter, for example.”
Her authenticity reveals how often leadership opportunities first come from looking inward.
