বাংলা তথা ভারতের ইতিহাস চিরকালের জন্য পালটে দিয়েছিল পলাশীর যুদ্ধ। এই যুদ্ধে অর্থের জোগান দিয়েছিলেন জগৎ শেঠ। বাংলার এই ধনী পরিবার সাক্ষী থেকেছে বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক পরিবর্তনের, সেই সাথে তাদের হাতে ছিল বিস্তর ক্ষমতা। অর্থের দিক থেকে সেই সময়ের সবথেকে ধনী পরিবার ছিল তারা। আজকের টাটা আম্বানি দের থেকে কোন অংশে কম ধনী তো ছিলই না তারা বরং হিসাব করলে দেখা যাবে হয়ত আরও সম্পদের অধিকারী ছিল এই পরিবার।

এই পরিবারের শুরু হয় হীরানন্দ সাহুর থেকে আর বাংলার নবাব মুর্শিদকুলি খানের অত্যন্ত প্রিয় পাত্র ছিলেন জগৎ শেঠ মানিক চাঁদ। বাংলায় স্বাধীন নবাবী শাসন শুরু হলে জগত সেঠ দের আর্থিক ক্ষমতা ও প্রতিপত্তি উভয় বাড়তে থাকে। মুঘল সম্রাট ফারুকশিয়ার প্রথমবার জগৎ শেঠ উপাধি দান করেন।

পলাশীর যুদ্ধে নবাবের বিরুদ্ধে যে গোপন আঁতাত তৈরি হয়েছিল তার সন্মুখে ছিলেন জগত শেঠ। বলা হয় সিরিজ ভরা সভায় একদিন জগত শেঠ কে অপমান করেন, তার থেকে শুরু হয় তাদের মধ্যে মনোমালিন্য। এই অবস্থার পূর্ণ সুযোগ নেয় ইংরেজরা।

কিন্তু পলাশীর যুদ্ধের পর জগৎশেদের ক্ষমতাও কমে যায় ইংরেজরা ট্যাঁকশাল সরিয়ে আনে কলকাতায়। সেই জগতশেঠ দের সম্পূর্ণ ইতিহাস আলোচনা করা হয়েছে এই ভিডিওতে

The history of Bengal and India was forever changed by the Battle of Plassey. Jagat Seth provided the money for this war. This wealthy family of Bengal witnessed various political changes, along with having immense power in their hands. They were the richest family of that time in terms of money. They were no less rich than the Tata Ambanis of today, in fact, if you calculate it, you will see that this family was more wealthy.

This family started with Hiranand Sahur and Jagat Seth Manik Chand was the very favorite of the Nawab of Bengal Murshid Quli Khan. When the independent Nawab rule began in Bengal, both the financial power and prestige of the Jagat Seths continued to increase. Mughal Emperor Farukshiar bestowed the title of Jagat Seth on them for the first time.

Jagat Seth was in front of the secret alliance that was formed against the Nawab in the Battle of Plassey. It is said that one day, in a series of meetings, he insulted Jagat Seth, which started the rift between them. The British took full advantage of this situation.

But after the Battle of Plassey, the power of Jagat Sheth also decreased and the British moved the tank to Kolkata. The complete history of those Jagat Sheths is discussed in this video.
