STORYLINE:
Carrying home their golden trophy, Italy's triumphant World Cup squad held a victory parade on Monday evening culminating in celebrations in front of ecstatic crowds of more than 500,000 fans.
The players stood on the top level of an open-roofed bus which struggled to move through thousands of fans, who, snapping photos with their mobile phones, ran after their heroes en route to the rally.
Fans on foot or on motorscooters had overwhelmed police escorts in the streets and squares of the capital, forcing the bus to a crawl.
Fans estimated by civil protection officials to number at least 500,000 had waited for hours for the players to arrive at the Circus Maximus, an arena built in ancient Rome, for a victory rally.
When the team arrived there were tumultuous scenes as the fans danced with joy in Circus Maximus.
The players at times were as delirious as their fans as they looked out over a sea of Italian flags and red flares.
