MD500 helicopter landing and takeoff at London Heliport N500SY

This former world record holder MD500 was built in 1983 and flew with N5144Q registration up until July 2006 when it was re-registered to N500SY. The helicopter was used by pilot Simon Oliphant-Hope of Eastern Atlantic Helicopters to circumnavigate the globe in 2004. Simon set a world record for circumnavigation the globe with a helicopter at 17 days, 14 hours, 2 minutes and 27 seconds. This record was later broken by Scott Kasprowicz and Steve Sheik in 2008 when they circumnavigated the globe in 11 days, 7 hours, and 2 minutes using an Agusta A109.

The MD Helicopters MD 500 series is an American family of light utility civilian and military helicopters. The 500 series design features shock-absorbing landing skid struts, a turboshaft engine mounted at a 45-degree angle toward the rear of the cabin pod, a fuel tank cell under the floor and the battery in the nose. The engine exhaust port is located at the end of the cabin pod underneath the tailboom. It has a short-diameter main rotor system and a short tail, giving it agile control response and is less susceptible to weather-cocking.

London Heliport (ICAO: EGLW), previously called Battersea Heliport and currently known officially as the Edmiston London Heliport for sponsorship reasons, is London's only licensed heliport.
The facility opened on 23 April 1959, it is located in Battersea on the south bank of the River Thames a few miles southwest of Westminster Bridge and between Wandsworth Bridge and Battersea Railway Bridge. The heliport, once owned by Westland and then Harrods, is a very small site, it provides a helipad for take-off and landing, and onshore parking for three to four aircraft, depending upon their size.

London Heliport has a fully licensed rescue and firefighting service who are on duty for all aircraft movements at the port as well as providing an emergency response to any helicopter incident within the London area.
