What is propaganda? And what is the meaning of propaganda?

Here's one powerful propaganda definition shared by one 20th-century Christian socialist, Jacques Ellul: "Propaganda is a covert communication method used in leading men to action."

That is, propaganda does not primarily serve to change the opinions of the masses, but instead, to reinforce and intensify them for the purposes of leading men to action.

This is an excerpt from a recent full-length teaching by Jerry Robinson entitled: Overcoming Political (And Religious) Propaganda

Video Description: In this brief video excerpt, teacher/researcher Jerry Robinson explains what propaganda is -- and what it is not. He also explains why propaganda is so effective and explores how its real aim is the mobilization of the masses.

Social media is perhaps the ultimate tool of the propagandist, which makes it particularly powerful in quickly spreading false ideas.

What is propaganda?

Put simply, propaganda seeks to inspire belief-motivated action.

For example, Nazi officials driven by propaganda did not believe themselves to be evil, but rather superior. Their belief-motivated actions led to mass murder.

Superiority is an extremely easy lever for the propagandist to employ as men want to believe that they are superior to others.

How does propaganda work and what is the true aim of propaganda?

The propagandist expends no energy on raising the political understanding of existing trends and world events. Instead, his goal is to achieve results through action.

While propaganda certainly attempts to influence public opinion, the real aim is mobilization.

Napoleon said it best: "The politics of the future will be the art of mobilizing the masses."

Propaganda is leveraged by every form of government including socialist, communist, and democratic regimes.

This brief video will help you understand how to identify propaganda and how to define propaganda.
