Le Barbier of Seville is Gioachino Rossini's best-known opera, with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini, created in 1816 and considered by many to be the masterpiece of Italian comic opera.
The story was taken from the comedy The Barber of Seville or Useless Precaution by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), first performed at the Théâtre -French on February 23, 1775, one of the three plays by this author counting among its heroes the character of Figaro.
Before Rossini, another Italian composer, Giovanni Paisiello, had composed Il barbiere di Siviglia, ovvero La precauzione inutile, created in 1782 and which was a huge success. Mozart composed The Marriage of Figaro, an opera inspired by Beaumarchais' trilogy, mainly by La Folle journée, or the Marriage of Figaro.
