A 5 year old sleeping boy was rescued by IFD SQ10 Firefighters after fire broke out in his apartment at 2810 Barbary Lane and forced his mother to evacuate. The woman (32) told IFD she awoke to find heavy black smoke, was unable to reach her child, panicked, evacuated out the sliding glass door and called 911.
IFD arrived to find smoke and fire pushing from the three story structure and made an aggressive attack. Simultaneously, IFD Squad 10 entered to conduct search operations and found the boy asleep, inside his bedroom, which thankfully had a closed door. The closed door kept the heavy black, toxic smoke from entering the bedroom thereby allowing the boy from sustaining any injury or much worse becoming a fatality.
The Fire Safety Research Institute "Close Before you Doze" initiative is an important message for all ages as it is proven to help save lives. Combined with a working smoke alarm and aggressive search measures by firefighters, this closed door was a vital piece in the successful outcome of this incident.
The son was transported by #IEMS for checkout, to Riley hospital.
