Explorer Arcade

Explorer is a shoot ’em up structured in two alternating scenes. The first scene places the player’s spacecraft in a forward-scrolling tunnel viewed from behind. The player pilots through this tunnel while avoiding obstacles and shooting enemies that appear ahead. This section emphasizes reflexes and navigation, presenting a sense of depth uncommon for the time.

Upon completing the tunnel, the game transitions to a second scene more typical of fixed shooters. The player’s ship moves horizontally along the bottom of the screen while enemies descend or attack from above. Defeating all enemies or surviving a wave advances the game to the next level, where the cycle repeats with increasing difficulty.

A life is lost if the ship collides with an enemy or is struck by enemy fire. The game ends when all lives are depleted. Explorer’s blend of two distinct perspectives, the 3D-style tunnel and the traditional 2D plane, distinguished it from many other arcade shooters of 1982, marking it as an ambitious if lesser-known entry in the DECO Cassette System library.
