I created this video to show some of the changes to ecosystems I've noticed while diving at the California Channel Islands over decades. Many sandy bottom ecosystems have become covered with carpets of brittle stars. And rocky ecosystems, once covered in kelp, have become urchin barrens. And some species have massive mortality events, sometimes related to viruses, such as sea stars that died due to sea star wasting syndrome.
This cove is on the east end of Santa Cruz Island at the California Channel Islands off California.
