Those laser pointers you can buy at the store actually pack some pretty powerful technology, and a recent study shows most manufacturers are actually jacking up their pointers' power output to illegal levels- meaning some consumer pointers have the ability to burn retinas and skin and blind airline pilots!

The NIST test apparatus was designed so that it can be replicated easily by other institutions."
