In this lecture, we discuss the phenomenon of spectral leakage that occurs invariably during the spectral analysis of finite-duration data acquired during experiments. We show that this spectral leakage is a result of the windowing of the true infinite-duration signal with a rectangle window. Thereafter, we discuss methods of mitigating spectral leakage: (i) by performing measurements over long time duration and (ii) using windowing functions, such as the Hanning and the Hamming windows. Finally, we look at an example of the application of the Hanning window.
