Mary Lawlor, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, delivered the keynote address at the Institute for Climate and Society Annual Conference 2025. Drawing on her extensive career, including her work with Amnesty International and as founder of Frontline Defenders, she argued that climate change is fundamentally a human rights crisis.
The address coincided with the launch of a new partnership between Frontline Defenders and Dublin City University, establishing rest and respite fellowships for human rights defenders. SR Lawlor condemned state inaction on climate change, highlighted the impunity faced by those suppressing environmental activism, and praised activists for defending rights and holding governments to account. In the discussion that followed, she reflected on activism and human rights in Ireland, warning against complacency and emphasising the power of local action, storytelling, and solidarity with those she described as “the hope for humanity in dark times.”
